It's been a long day and I'm very tired, so I'm going to save the words for another time. Here's the basics....
Weight: still haven't checked
Energy level: moderate to pretty low at night
Headache: has returned- it's a sinus headache for sure, I've begun using the neti pot and I took some ibuprofin. I know that's cheating. It's been pretty intense.
Here are the recipes for today. I introduced broccoli and sweet potatoes, two things I'd never juiced before. I was afraid of the sweet potatoe juice but it tasted alright, gives things a creamy texture, it's nice and silky, but a little chalky also, sort of a strange new texture. The broccoli blended in smoothly with my regular evening juice that I really need to start varying a bit more.
Sweet potato, orange, pinapple
10 oz sweet potato juice- I can't find any info- let's say 150
28 oz orange juice- 392
24 oz pinapple juice- 396
62 oz- 938 calories
Evenig Juice, introducing broccoli and jalepeno
1oz beet juice-6 calories
2 oz broccoli- can't find calories- guessing something like 20?
18 oz carrot- 211
1 oz kale- 5
1.5 oz parsley- 10
4 oz apple-60
5oz cucumber -40
4 oz pear-75
2 oz celery- 11
a thumb of jalepeno
37 oz- 438 calories
Total for day: 99 oz at 1376 calories.
Still haven't hit 120 ounces. I know, I'm shocked too.

Day 5 Faster, Deeper, Thank you

taking pictures of oneself drinking juice is awkward
I've also been thinking about this 30 day goal. I'm going to stick with it, but why 30 days? Dont get me wrong, I'm sticking with it unless I float away into space first, I'm just sayin it's such an arbitrary number. I suppose I chose it to push myself harder than I've pushed myself before, like 3 times harder, and maybe it's because a couple of people inspired me.
Toward the end of my year in Costa Rica, I met a man named Gary. Gary was a really interesting man who owned a huge plot of land in a small town along the southern Pacific coast. Gary invited me to visit his property, much of which is pristine jungle, much of which he is returning to jungle, and some of which he is building and farming on, very very naturally. Anyway, Gary was living off the grid in a more intense way than anyone I'd met yet. He lived very minimally, I mean seriously minimally, with his resource consumption, in all ways. One night we started talking about fasts, and I'd mentioned I'd been craving a fast since I hadn't done one in the year I'd been in Costa Rica. He asked why not and I mentioned I didn't have a juicer. He then told me he did 50-60 water fasts once or twice a year. He did this because he'd made a promise to himself that if he lived to 50 (he didn't think he was going to and was the first male in his family for several generations to do so) he'd do a 50 water fast. And he did it. I'd always read that water fasts were dangerous and so I asked a lot of questions. I'm not going to share the whole conversation, but Gary was now many years beyond 50, and does this water fast once or twice a year still. He kept telling me that I should go for at least 30 days if I really want to get the full potential out of a fast. He's vibrant, energetic, healthy as shit, and he radiates. So Gary got me thinking and he encouraged me to take my fasts deeper. Because of who he is, I mean the totality of everything that he is, not just that he fasts but because he busts ass in life and is shining for it, I trust him and his encouragement led me to want to take my fast deeper.
Another person who inspired me was my former neighbor Molly (Molly, I so deeply miss your presence), whom I love and adore, who is a fellow faster and juicer like me. When I moved in next door to her, we slowly delighted in discovering similarities, and we both had chamion juicers- squeel! Well, we didn't squeel, but maybe a little..... we did, ok fine. Anyway, again, while I was spending a year in Costa Rica, Molly decided to do a 30 juice fast for the first time, all times before I believe she went for 10 days, or maybe 12 or something. I remember her telling me afterward that, first of all, she felt amazing, and second of all, 30 days makes 10 days feel pointless, in the same way that 10 days makes 5 days seem pointless.
And so it's the memories I have of others who have shared their experiences that motivates me to try harder and go deeper. I guess those people are teachers to me, and as always, I've got so much love, respect and gratitude for the teachers I've had in this life. So from me, feeling motivated and awesome on Day 5, I thank you:)
Recipes and tedious calorie counting follow:
Weight: I didn't weigh myself, still don't have a scale
Grapefruit, Orange, Mango, Blackberry
24 oz grapefruit- 288
24 oz orange juice-336
4 oz mango juice- 64 calories
4 oz blackberry juice-46
56 oz at 734 calories
I expected to like this one more than I did, but I think mango and grapefruit aren't the best combo, I mean it wasn't bad, just not the best.
this was a really nice change of pace
Pear, Spinach and stuff
6 oz pear-112
2 oz spinach-3.5
4 oz papaya-70
6 oz cucumber- 52
6 oz apple-90
2 oz celery- 11
26 oz- 338 calories
I realized I've got to start adding variety with my combos and I've got to add some new fruits and vegetables, so this oneis just a slightly different combo with papaya. I read later that papaya is mostly sugar, so I might use it sparingly.
I love these big bowls of chopped things waiting to course through me
From the Mean Green Juice recipe #3
1 oz beet greens- 5 calories
1 oz poplano pepper and ginger mixed- none?
3 oz kale- 18
2 oz beet juice- 10 calories
10 oz carrot- 117 calories
13 oz apple-156
30 oz- 306 calories
Total for the day: 112 oz at 1378- still not at 120 ounces, damn it!
Day 4 Over the Hump
On Day 4 I woke up feeling bright and fresh, not hungry one bit and no headache. And that's when the joy of fasting begins, after day 3, and it only gets better as the days go by. In general, my energy was up, I worked felt totally fine. I thought I was going to have to start the mechanical cleansing of my colon, but I got a nice surprise, and think I might wait another day or two for that:) So those of you who are waiting for me to descripe a self administered enema (you sickos!) are just going to have to keep waiting.
Oh, and I weighed myself today and my weight is 110.5, so I don't think I've actually lost any weight which is a good thing, especially since I have yet to reach my goal of 120 ounces of juice per day. I can say with certainty that I'm consuming at least 120 ounces of fluid per day if you include the herbal teas and water.
My nose has been on high alert, and I can smell food for miles. I kind of feel like a dog, looking at food everywhere that I know I can't have. And the crazy cravings are starting, like the Mc Donalds commercial talking about chicken mc nuggets made me think it would be really nice to have some. I don't think I've eaten a chicken mc nugget since highschool, but there I was, fantasizing about it. In fact, I want one right now. And then, the other night I went for a walk with my friend and we stopped in a new neighborhood restaraunt just to look and see what it was (french inspired nouveau cuisine- knuckle bite) We left with the menu and since he can't read without his reading glasses, I had to read it to him. It was a really nice place, with an awesome menu. Reading it was torture.
It's evening now and I say with sadness that another headache has set in. They call it detox symptoms, I think it's a sinus headache. It kind of sucks, but it's evening, I can finish this post and crawl into bed, I'm sure it will be gone by morning.
Juices for today
Cantelope- just cantelope-rind, seeds and all
3 and 3/4 cantelope juice (30 oz)- 220 calories
If you've never had cantelope juice you have no idea what you're missing.
Apple, pear, lemon, blackberry, spinach
2 (16 oz)cups pear juice- 300 calories
1/2 (4 oz) cup blackberry juice-45
2 (16 oz)cups apple juice- 240 calories
1/4 (2oz)spinach juice- 7 calories
1/4 (2 oz) cup lemon juice-13
40 oz at 605 calories
The standard evening juice-
13 oz carrot- 15 carrots- 152 calories
3 oz kale- half a bunch of kale- 15 calories
2 oz spinach- half a bunch of spinach- 7 calories
4 oz apple- 1 green apple- 60 calories
2 oz beet- 2 small beets -12 calories
4 oz cucumber- 1 cucumber- 35 calories
2 oz celery- the center core of the celery- 11
with a thumb of ginger and a quarter of poplano pepper for flavor
30 oz at 292 calories
Total for the day: 100 oz at 1117 calories. Much closer to the goal but not there yet.
I'm already bored of counting calories and calculating it all and stuff. It's so much nicer just throwing a bunch of stuff in the juicer and going about the day. Keeping track of it is tedious and posting it is eh... I hope someone gets something useful out of it. I guess it's a good excercise in doing something I said I'd do even though I don't wanna. My commitment to this fast isn't waning, but my excitment about posting about calorie consumption is. There's so much other stuff to share but this takes time and space. Perhaps once I'm half way through I'll switch gears.

Day 3- MAN this is hard!
For a good part of the day I found myself wondering why I'm doing this. My energy level is still pretty low and this on and off headache is bringing me down. I did have a few hours today where I started to feel a little lively, and that helped me remember what this is all about. Lots of people say that day 3 is the hardest, I've got to agree, it always has been in the past and today was solid confirmation for me. Toward the end of the day, while doing yoga, I realized that it's been a verym very long time since I havn't given myself exactly what I wanted pretty much when ever I wanted it, so there might be some whiney baby stuff happening inside of me right now, which is good. I need to get that out and get over it, and remember how fortunate I am to have the choice to not eat for 30 days.
Anyway- the juices
First juice of the day was excellent. Apple, Pear, Lemon, Ginger. Simple and super yummy. I should have added parsley to it though, next time
1 and 1/2 cups (12 oz) apple juice with 25 black berries in it as well- 180 calories
1 and 1/2 cups (12 oz) pear juice- 225 calories
1/2 a lemon juice (1oz)- 8 calories
Total: 25 oz and 413 calories and omg delicious
Then later I made more of my usual evening juice, and added some tomato. I also juiced some things together, so the calorie breakdown is a little harder to figure out but.....
16 oz carrot juice (10 carrots)- 188 calories
3 oz celery juice (3 stalks)-16
1/4 cup spinach juice (2 oz) (1 huge bunch of spinach)- 4 calories
1/4 cup kale, beet greens (2oz) (3 kale leaves and the greens from a beet)- 9 calories
1 and 1/2 cup parsley, cucumber tomato- 12 oz (1 huge bunch parsley, 1 cucumber, 1 tomato)- 111
4 and 1/2 oz apple, and beet juice (1 apple, 1 beet)- 40 calories
39.5 oz at 368 calories
Total for the day: 64.5 oz at 781 calories. Not even close to my goal
I'm finding that it's going to be really hard to make 120 ounces of juice per day. I honestly thought I'd be really driven to make it, but it's been more of a challenge than I thought. Another thing I'm realizing is that while it's always recommened that one juice more veggies than fruits, the fruits are where all the easy calories are. So right now I'm trying to come up with ways to find more veggies that are more calorie heavy to juice. And I'm also looking for ways to make it less expensive but I am kind of stumped on that one for now.
Tomorrow I think I'm going to have to start helping my body eliminate, those processes seem to be slowing down. And I'm going to blog all about it when it happens, I bet you can't wait!

Day 2- more recipes and a dream
OK- So, Day 2.
I started the day with no headache thank. fucking. gaaawd! and an orange grapefruit juice again, just because they are so easy and delicious and super inexpensive right now and exceptionally tasty since it's grapefruit season here in Texas. If you live here and you aren't eating grapfruits right now you're doing yourself a huge disservice. just sayin. I wonder if there are greens that would go good with a citrus juice. I've read that it's not good to mix citrus with greens, but I don't really know why or if it's true. More research needed.
Grapefruit orange
4 and 3/4 cups (38oz) grapefruit juice-456
2 and 3/4 (22oz) cups orange juice-308
Total 60oz and 764 calories. not bad.
For my second juice, I made basically the same as yesterday, but used less carrots because I only had like 7, and added a little bit of poblano pepper for a little spice. It made a little bit less, probably more like 40 ounces, so let's call it 350 calories. I'm not going to bother positing pics or the recipe because it was the same.
Total for the day- 80 oz at 1114 calories. Not bad but still not 120, that's going to be hard. Need more juice.
Last night I had a crazy dream about food. It was really vivid and strange. In real life my dad was a grocery and liquor store owner in Michigan, and I grew up working in his store. I was able to eat pretty much whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. The result was that I ate a LOT of TV dinners- when they were called TV dinners. Anyway, in this dream, his store was huge, kind of like a giant Whole foods or some other fancy supermarket and I was almost in a panic trying to gather food before it closed. I was wandering the isles which was much like wandering the streets of Chicago, looking for food, but knowing that I had to be careful because danger could be just arond the corner. I found the bakery which was closing and asked if I could please have a couple of bagels for free, since they were going to pitch them at the end of the day anyway. They obliged. Then I wandered looking for the frozen food isle (somewhere near Ashland and Division?) on a search for something easy and fast but frozen so I could heat it up later. I remember feeling desperate and really hungry and afraid I wasn't going to find what I wanted before the store closed and then I wouldn't have anything. The mood of the whole dream was dark and ominous, and none of those feelings really fit with how I feel about fasting.
Well, anyway, it was just a dream. I felt a lot better today, did yoga for two hours and went on a two hour walk with my good buddy Steve. We wandered through downtown, checked out new architecture and I battled the desire to eat food about once a block as we passed fragrances that peaked my interest. I kind of felt like a dog with a really hieghtened sense of smell. I'd forgotten how that happens, how the smell of food triggers so many cravings when fasting. But overall, I'm feeling pretty good. Have a slight headache coming on again, I'm probably not drinking enough water.

Oh yah, I'd said I'd mention other things like health issues, weight ect. Health issues will be another post, but body weight as of last week (last time I weighed myself) was 110lbs. Does anyone have a scale I can borrow?
